EV Charging Solutions

EV charging is one of the fastest-growing subsegments in the automotive industry, with the charging infrastructure market in Europe alone forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 30% between now and 2030.

While sales of electric vehicles continue to soar across the world, the corresponding number of charging points is lagging behind, leaving consumers and car manufacturers in urgent need of more. In the UK alone, the Policy Exchange think-tank predicts a need for over 400,000 charging points, where there are currently only 65,000. With this anticipated level of demand comes a need for cost effective, durable solutions, that offer both speed and flexibility.

Fast chargers are currently in the spotlight, with the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requiring public fast chargers to be available every 60km along the Trans-European Transport Network: the region’s main transport corridor.

Governments are backing these ambitions with hard cash, with Germany planning to invest €3 billion by 2030 into the extension of the public charging network and the UK government recently announcing plans to grow the number of charge points to reach 300,000 over the same period, at an estimated additional cost of £1.6 billion

This is all great news for players in the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) market, especially when you consider the EU’s target equates to around 6 million additional chargers by 2030.

Engineering the Future

Worldwide annual sales in electric vehicles (EVs) set a new high in 2020, reaching 3.2 million units according to figures from Statista. That is approximately 65% up on the sales activity recorded for the previous year. The availability of a wider variety of different models with improved performance parameters, combined with government incentives aimed at lightening the costs involved, are leading to ever greater EV traction. There are still certain issues that need to be addressed, however, if further uptake is to be encouraged.

We talk IoT - The Smart Industry Podcast: The Future of EV Charging

Electric vehicles or EVs are cool, but there are still twists in the road to market maturity. From accessibility and standardization issues to a lack of convenient and secure payment methods at charging stations, these could still throw a spoke in the wheel of electromobility. We are joined by Thomas Wagner of in-tech GmbH, a pioneer smart charging company based in Leipzig, and Thomas Foj, Director Vertical Market EMEA at Avnet Silica, to talk about the future of EV Charging.

The Future of EV Charging Series

According to Reuters, the world's major car companies expect to spend nearly $1.2 trillion between now and 2030 to develop and produce electric vehicles, along with the batteries and raw materials needed for them.

Electric vehicles aren't going anywhere and the future is certainly electric, but what obstacles do we need to overcome in order for consumers to completely buy into electric vehicles?

Harvey Wilson addresses these obstacles in his three-part EV charging series...

  • Part 1: The Future of EV Charging - Revolutionary Developments are Closer Than You Think
  • Part 2: Integrating EV Charging with Matter and the Smart Home
  • Part 3: How V2G Benefits Drivers and Electricity Suppliers
